In my classroom in particular, you will find that I focus on:

Encouraging Creativity.  Thinking outside the box is welcomed. Discussion is expected. Different viewpoints are valued.

Respect. I both give and expect respect - for me, the school, your peers and yourself.

Teamwork. You will always have to work with others in the world. We will be counting on you.

If you want to know how to succeed, know that I am a strict but fair teacher. I will expect you to work hard, but I know that you, like me, are human, and will make mistakes and need support through those mistakes.  I believe that mistakes are the way we learn, so if you aren't making mistakes and having fun, you are not yet doing it right. :)

I believe that every student is priceless, and that a teacher’s top priority should be to help students find their true selves and encourage them to share their talents and uniqueness with the world.  Differences are valued in my classroom and I expect my classroom to be a safe space for all.

In our new curriculum, we are expected to encourage students to be thoughtful and conscientious citizens.  I feel we should model such expectations, and I also believe a teacher should be a strong voice for equality.  Because of this belief, I am currently the Social Justice Chair for Coquitlam, and am a CTA Rep, hoping to make a difference for my colleagues as well as students. My goal is to be patient, fair, trustworthy and a collaborative leader. Teachers are more than just the leaders of the classroom - they are the leaders of a community.

I believe that a teacher must be flexible and creative in their ability to adapt teaching methods to the needs of their students.  This requires an in depth knowledge of the subject matter, a passion for the subject, and sometimes an unusual approach to teaching or assessment.

Finally, I am a life long learner, and will do my best to promote self reflection and a love of learning in my students. I strive to stay relevant with popular culture and ever evolving art techniques and will continue to develop my skills as an educator with ongoing training and inquiry.
