Self Identity Project

In this project, you will tell me about school life, yourself or what you are passionate about.  This should be an inquiry or documentation of what interests you.

If you aren't sure what to do, ask yourself what you would do if you did not have to do anything.

Or ask a question - who are my friends and why? and document that process of understanding and investigation.

Perhaps you have a strong viewpoint or belief, for instance that schools should have to be interested in fashion for student fun and engagement. What would you photograph to prove your point that fashion is fun, and educationally helpful to students?

Or perhaps you want to document this time period in your life. You can photograph some of your hobbies and school life. What do you do for fun?  What things do you do with friends? What do you do to increase your learning? To better understand yourself?

Remember, photos of others require a photo release.  (Sample release form below.)

The model release form is a contract that outlines the agreement between a model and the photographer, most often used in fashion photography. A model release allows the photographer to use the photos commercially.  However, one should always be used when shooting other people.  Always obtain a model release prior to shooting, regardless of whether the model or friend is paid or unpaid.

In Canada, taking photos of an individual in public is a protected right for the photographer since privacy can not be guaranteed to anyone in a public place. The exception is that the photographer cannot sell a picture commercially without a model release. So, if you took an amazing street photo of a unassuming subject, get a release signed afterwards.

When photographing groups of people in public, a model release form should be signed by any individuals in the photo that stand out as “identifiable” due to their unique look, dress, tattoos or other distinguishing characteristics. If the photo is used for anything that can be considered defamatory, offensive, scandalous, harmful or portrayed in a false manner, then any identifiable person in the photo who did not sign a model release may have the right to file a suit against you.

Lastly, be aware that shots of a private event that is happening in public  (i.e. weddings, birthday parties, etc.) may be seen as illegal since the subjects have an implied right to privacy.
